Competition law. Advises clients with respect to the Competition Act; including con-
spiracy, bid-rigging, mergers, trade association activities, misleading advertising and other
reviewable trade practices. Regularly advises clients with respect to regulatory approval
under the Competition Act and the Investment Canada Act, in respect of major transac-
tions. Litigation counsel in cases under various provisions of the Competition Act, includ-
ing extensive experience in class actions, including DRAM, Air Cargo, Hydrogen Perox-
ide, EPDM, Chocolate, LCD and Credit Cards. Recently successfully represented Visa
Canada as lead counsel before the Competition Tribunal in a contested price maintenance
application. Developed a recognized profi ciency in the misleading advertising fi eld and
has acted as counsel in some of the leading comparative advertising cases in Canada, in-
cluding Church & Dwight v. Si o and UPS v. Purolator. Member of the ABA's Interna-
tional Task Force and Vice Chair of the Competition law and policy committee of the
Canadian Chamber of Commerce. Admitted to Ontario Bar in 1986.
David Kent is Co-chair of the fi rm's Dispute Resolution Group and Co-chair of its Class
Action Practice, and a member of its Competition and IP groups. His practice emphasizes
complex litigation, including competition, copyright, commercial and regulatory disputes.
His extensive class-action experience includes over 40 national cases involving competi-
tion, consumer, privacy and securities claims in a wide range of industries, raising issues
including cross-border discovery, settlement and certifi cation. He has been counsel in
many competition cases, including over 25 cartel class actions (e.g., vitamins, rubber chem-
icals, cross-border vehicle sales, credit cards, e-books, Gmail and computer components
such as DRAM, SRAM, LCDs and CRTs), as well as private actions, contested mergers
and Competition Bureau investigations. Kent taught ADR at Osgoode Hall Law School
(Toronto) and Queen's University Law School (Kingston) for nine years. Member, CBA,

John Rook is a litigation partner at Bennett Jones LLP specializing in commercial, ad-
ministrative and competition law. Rook appears in courts throughout Canada in commer-
cial and administrative law claims, including most recently in Nova Scotia and Manitoba.
He is recognized by Chambers Global as "among the most sought-a er competition litiga-
tors in Canada." He acts for the Commissioner of Competition in mergers and reviewable
practices, as well as numerous clients in the private sector in both civil and criminal pro-
ceedings under the Competition Act. He writes extensively in his areas of expertise and is a
frequent speaker. In the community, Rook is a director of the Stratford Shakespeare Festi-
val Endowment Foundation and Chair of the St. Andrew's College Foundation.
Head of the Litigation Department of Davies in Toronto, with extensive experience in
complex, "high stakes" litigation at the trial and appellate levels. Has acted as counsel in a
number of leading cases in Canada in a wide range of areas, including commercial disputes,
securities cases, competition law and class actions. Has recently argued successfully a num-
ber of appeals in the Supreme Court of Canada involving the law of oppression, plans of
arrangement, the intersection of copyright and broadcasting law and the law of contested
elections. Has also conducted complex domestic and international arbitrations in Canada,
