On March 1, 2018, GFL Environmental Inc.
(GFL), by its wholly owned subsidiary GFL
Environmental Inc. 2018, completed the ac-
quisition of Smithrite Disposal (Smithrite)
and Carney's Waste Systems (Carney's).
Smithrite and Carney's are the premier
independent solid waste service providers in
British Columbia.
e acquisition will complement and ex-
tend GFL's existing solid and liquid waste op-
erations in British Columbia. Gordon Smith,
the son of the founders of Smithrite Dispos-
al, Ascher and Irene Smith, will remain with
GFL working to integrate and continue to
build the combined business.
Stikeman Elliott LLP acted for GFL un-
der the direction of Joy Grahek, Jonathan Ip
and Alliet Ngorima at GFL with a team that
included Jeffrey Singer, Tim Chubb and Kim
Le (M&A), Jennifer Legge, Shawn Smith

ELLIOTT MANAGEMENT

On April 4, 2018, Coveo Solutions Inc.
successfully received its $100-million in-
vestment from Elliott Management Corp.
Elliott Management, a US investment gi-
ant, has purchased a 27-per-cent stake in the
company, through its Silicon Valley-based
private-equity arm, Evergreen Coast Capital.
Based in Québec, Coveo Solutions is a
fast-growing company that provides AI-
powered search and recommendations so-
lutions to enterprises.
Coveo Solutions intends to use the invest-
ment from Elliott Management to further
expand its R&D team.
Coveo Solutions was represented in-house
by Anne ériault (legal counsel, CIPP/E
CIPP/US) and Magali Brunelle. Norton
Rose Fulbright Canada LLP advised Co-
veo Solutions with a team that was composed
of François Duchesneau, Pierre Nicol, Em-
manuel Grondin, Antoine Desroches (tax)

COINSQUARE CLOSES
$30M INVESTMENT
IN CANADIAN DIGITAL
CURRENCY EXCHANGE

On February 8, 2018, goNumerical Ltd.
(d.b.a. Coinsquare) announced that it had
completed a marketed equity financing for
total proceeds of approximately $30 mil-
lion. Coinsquare raised $47.3 million in a
little over four months at equity valuations
increasing from $30 million to $430 million.
e most recent round of funding will be
used to fuel a global growth plan and diver-
sification strategy. Canaccord Genuity Corp.
led the financing.
Coinsquare is one of Canada's leading,
most secure trading platforms and digital
currency exchanges for the world's most pop-
ular digital currencies. It has since grown to
be the premier digital exchange in the coun-
try and has raised considerable funds to posi-
tion itself for international growth.
