For a few years now, the IQPF has taken advantage of the end of
winter to hold a campaign promoting your profession. This year, the
"Burden of Personal Finances" campaign featured office colleagues
concerned about their finances in an ad broadcast in March during
popular Radio-Canada TV programs and on the internet. We also
made use of social media by broadcasting "Facebook Live" events on
Sundays, during Tout le monde en parle. People could ask questions
on Facebook and receive a live response from a financial planner.
This campaign reached thousands of people, and we hope we raised
awareness in a fair few of them. Of course, the topic itself is a bit
of a challenge. You chose this profession, so you are aware of the
importance of properly managing one's personal finances. When
you talk to regular folk, few would argue the contrary. Still, sound
personal financial management is not a very "sexy" topic. So it's a
lengthy battle. A bit like eating an elephant: you have to go at it one
mouthful at a time!
Luckily, the situation continues to evolve. Like me, you have probably
noticed an improvement in the general public's financial knowledge,
at least among the people you meet from day to day. As a financial
planner, you are in an ideal position to move things forward.
Things are advancing on the legislative side, as well. The IQPF was
invited by the Commission des finances publiques to present a brief
about Bill 141. This brief was submitted on January 17 and highlights,
among other things, the need to provide better oversight for the
financial sector in Québec, to better protect and inform the public.
Future of the profession
As Chair of the IQPF Board of Directors, I am in an especially
privileged position to see the development of our profession. For
example, I have the pleasure of meeting the new IQPF graduates at
our graduation ceremony. It is a formal but emotional event. In 2017,
273 new graduates joined your ranks to help improve the financial
situation of our fellow Québecers.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE,
ONE STEP AT A TIME
