Broad and eclectic cross-border international commercial litigation practice with empha-
sis on matters involving some element of dishonesty or corporate misconduct, including
white-collar crime, securities fraud, corruption and competition law violations. He
has acted as counsel to boards of directors, audit committees and special committees
investigating allegations of serious corporate misconduct. Recognized as a creative and
strategic problem-solver. He has also acted as counsel and arbitrator in numerous domes-
tic and international arbitrations. He has appeared before all levels of court in Canada
and numerous administrative tribunals. Frequent lecturer on a broad range of issues and
former part-time teacher at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law.
Counsel in the Toronto office of BLG. Member of Arbitration Place, Toronto. Sat on the
Court of Appeal for Ontario from 1998 to 2012. Served as the Associate Chief Justice
of Ontario from 2001 until he retired at the end of 2012. While on the Bench, he dealt
with a wide variety of issues, including commercial, securities and insurance law. Also
conducted two successful public inquiries: the Walkerton Inquiry (2000‒02) and the
Maher Arar Inquiry (2004‒06). Prior to appointment at the Court of Appeal, was senior
counsel at Borden & Elliot (a predecessor firm of BLG). Practice focused on commercial
and public-law litigation and appeared as lead counsel on many major cases in Ontario
and elsewhere in Canada during that time. Chair of Pro Bono Canada. Member of the
Board of Directors of the Association of the Wrongfully Convicted. Fellow of the Ameri-
can College of Trial Lawyers. Obtained LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1964
and called to the Ontario Bar in 1966. Appointed Queen's Counsel in 1980.

rate and shareholders' remedies, professional liability, construction law, commercial real

SCC. Has also appeared before administrative tribunals and international/domestic

Joined Torys as Counsel in September 2004 aer retiring as a Justice of the Supreme
Court of Canada. Was Chief Justice of the Federal Court and Deputy Attorney General
for Canada prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court. Also began serving as
Interim President of the University of Toronto in September 2004 and assumed a full-
time senior advisory role at Torys in July 2005. Advises government and businesses on
important legal and policy matters. Provides guidance, advice and support to clients
of Torys and members of the firm. A former professor and dean of the University of
Toronto Faculty of Law and former Vice President and Provost, also at the Univer-
sity of Toronto. Author of numerous publications and recipient of many awards and
