Partner. Will McDowell's wide-ranging practice has included many landmark cases,
most notably in the Supreme Court of Canada. He appears in commercial litigation, libel
and public law cases. From 2005 to 2008, he was Canada's Associate Deputy Minister
of Justice, with responsibility for civil litigation, national security and issues involving
central agencies. He subsequently served as amicus to the Superior Court with regard
to land occupations in Brantford and was chief counsel to the City of Mississauga
Judicial Inquiry. He acted for the Chief of Police of Toronto, the Chief Adjudicator of
the Independent Assessment Process of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and
as amicus to the Superior Court in relation to Aboriginal land occupations in Brant-
ford. McDowell's work in resolving the landmark Arar v. Canada case was honored by
a Department of Justice National Award. McDowell is an elected Bencher of the Law
Society of Upper Canada.
Partner in the Litigation group at Goodmans. Practice includes corporate-commercial
litigation, class actions and electricity law and regulation. Corporate-commercial litiga-
tion practice focuses on corporate governance, corporate finance, securities, financial
services, and restructuring and insolvency. Class-action practice includes securities,
product liability and environmental claims. Also carries on a substantial electricity and
regulatory practice, regularly representing clients in the electricity sector before the
Ontario Energy Board and the courts. Has appeared at all levels of the Ontario and
Federal Courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada, before the courts of several
other provinces and before various administrative tribunals. Fellow of the American
College of Trial Lawyers and a former director and Past President of e Advocates'
Society. Frequent speaker and CLE instructor. Recommended counsel in numerous
leading directories and in 2013 was recognized as Canada's Energy/Resource "Litigator
of the Year" by Benchmark Canada.
Paul Michell's practice focuses on complex corporate-commercial litigation and arbitra-
tion, shareholder disputes and oppression, civil appeals and judicial review. He has
particular expertise in arbitration and arbitration-related court proceedings, private
international law, and lawyers' conflicts of interest. Called to the Bar of Ontario in 1997,
he was clerk to Justice Gonthier of the Supreme Court of Canada, and is a Fellow of
the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He has appeared in all levels of court and various
administrative and arbitral tribunals, and has acted as an arbitrator. He has taught inter-
national commercial arbitration as an adjunct professor at the Faculty of Law, University
of Toronto for more than a decade. He was named a "Future Star" for Ontario Litiga-
tion by Benchmark Canada, an "Up and Coming" Ontario Dispute Resolution Lawyer
by Chambers Global, a "Canadian Litigation Lawyer to Watch," "Consistently Recom-
mended" for Litigation ‒ Corporate Commercial, and one of Lexpert®'s "Rising Stars:

Partner. Called to the Ontario Bar in 1974. Practices exclusively civil litigation and
administrative law. Has appeared in all levels of court in Ontario, the Supreme Court
of Canada and the Federal Court, and many administrative tribunals. Acted as lead
commission counsel for the Ipperwash Inquiry. Acts as an arbitrator and mediator. Is a
fellow of the ACTL. Derry Millar is a former Treasurer (President) of e Law Society
of Upper Canada, the governing body for Ontario lawyers and paralegals. He was first
elected a Bencher (Director) of the LSUC in 1995 and has been Chair and Vice Chair of
a wide variety of LSUC Committees and a Director of the Lawyers' Professional Indem-
nity Company. Millar was a member of the Board of Legal Aid Ontario from January
1999 to June 2008 and was reappointed a Director in April 2011. Has been a speaker and
delivered papers on a wide variety of legal seminars and has contributed to legal publica-
tions. He was a law clerk at the Supreme Court of Canada.
