Mike Hurst is a partner and manager of the fi rm's Energy Transactions Practice
Section in the Calgary offi ce. Hurst's expertise is in the area of energy law. His advice has
been sought with respect to oil and gas upstream, midstream and pipeline acquisitions,
the structuring of greenfi eld projects, fi nancing transactions and product sales arrange-
ments. Hurst has worked on infrastructure projects in the Western Canada Sedimentary
Basin, the Canadian Arctic and off shore areas and South America. Hurst has acted in the
structuring of three large oil sands joint ventures.

Pat Maguire is the co-head of the Bennett Jones LLP corporate department and a
member of the fi rm's Energy Practice Group. He acts for energy companies on a broad
range of commercial transactions, both in Canada and internationally. He assists energy
companies with purchase and sale transactions and almost all aspects of energy project
development, including joint venturing, commodity processing, transportation, sales and
related transactions. He also assists borrowers in structuring and negotiating full and
limited recourse fi nancing arrangements for oil, gas and electricity companies. His MBA
dissertation related to risk management and fi nancing of international energy projects
not only provides an educational background for his practice but also provides a signifi -
cant understanding of decisions from a business perspective.

Rick Neufeld focuses on environmental, regulatory and Aboriginal law. He has acted as
environmental and regulatory counsel in respect of a variety of global projects, including
petrochemical plants, oil sands plants, hazardous waste treatment facilities and interna-
tional pipelines. He has represented project proponents before the Natural Resources
Conservation Board, e Energy Resources Conservation Board, e National Energy
Board, e Environmental Appeal Board and various municipal planning tribunals. He
has lectured and published extensively in the areas of environmental Aboriginal, and
regulatory law, including authoring the Alberta portion of the textbook Contaminated
Property in Canada, (Carswell omson Professional Publishing, 1996). He has advised
governments and regulatory boards and industry in respect of off shore energy transporta-
tion and development issues in all areas of Canada. He is Past Chairman of the Canadian
Institute of Resources Law and a Director of the Alberta Chamber of Resources.
