Editor-in-Chief Jean Cumming IN THIS TIME when your clients face storms or turmoil in their businesses, they may occur halfway around the world. When they do, and if they turn legal, you retain foreign counsel. If those events occur in Canada, it would be easy enough to think that you are close to home and need not worry about jurisdictional dif- ferences: in other words, you can take it from here. It is true that you are with neighbors and our systems are very, very similar. But on the edges of our legal systems there are differences that can significantly affect your clients. Isn't it on the edges where litigation lawyers make the differ- ence? For example, many legal disputes are presently heard in dispute resolution forums that are confidential, particularly mediation and arbitration. We believe that word of who is the most effective counsel in those forums is reflected in our peer Surveys while confidentiality is kept intact. Storms do not generally make for smooth sailing. That's why we encourage you to retain Canadian counsel for matters that affect your clients' Canadian inter- ests. In this Lexpert® Guide to the Leading US/Canada Cross-border Litigation Lawyers, we provide information on lawyers ranked in a range of litigation prac- tice areas. If the names of these practice areas sound slightly different than you are accustomed to at home, please let us know. We would be pleased to translate. CLOSE TO HOME BUT NOT QUITE THERE EDITORIAL
