In Vancouver, Cassels Brock & Blackwell
LLP added two restructuring and insol-
vency lawyers to its roster. Mary Buttery
and Lance Williams both moved from
DLA Piper (Canada) LLP. Buttery is a vet-
eran insolvency law practitioner whose cli-
ents span the mining, retail, real estate and
forestry sectors. She is also an experienced
commercial litigator, with expertise in the
enforcement of foreign judgments, debt en-
forcement and fraud. Williams is extensively
involved in insolvency proceedings, and also
advises borrowers and lenders on financial-
services matters.
Trevor Scott moved to Osler, Hoskin &
Harcourt LLP as a partner. He was previ-
ously with Farris, Vaughan, Wills & Mur-
phy LLP. Scott is a veteran advisor on M&A,
with more than 20 years of experience.
Recent matters include advising Whistler
Blackcomb's special committee in relation
to its acquisition by Vail Resorts.
Graham Kosakoski joined David
Rosenberg, QC, to create Rosenberg Ko-
sakoski LLP, a boutique litigation firm with
expertise in Aboriginal rights and title liti-
gation, class actions, appellate advocacy and
criminal law. Kosakoski has a varied litiga-
tion practice and has appeared at all levels of
court in British Columbia. He is called to
the Bars of British Columbia, Ontario and
New York.
Sandra Abley joined Harper Grey LLP
as associate counsel aer moving from
BMO Wealth Management, where she was
a regional director. Abley advises on wealth
management and preservation.
ALBERTA CALGARY
In Calgary, JoAnn Jamieson joined
McLennan Ross LLP as a partner. She is an
experienced practitioner of energy, environ-
mental, regulatory and Aboriginal law with
a focus on project development and land use.
Doug Richardson moved to Cas-
sels Brock & Blackwell LLP, where
he is now a partner. He advises on
taxation issues associated with oil
and gas acquisitions, energy-
related investments and projects.
For example, in 2015, he repre-
sented TransCanada in its acqui-
sition of BPC Generation Infra-
structure Trust's limited partner-
ship interests in Bruce Power. He
also advised TransCanada Trust in
its US$1.5-billion offering of trust
notes. Richardson was formerly
with Stikeman Elliott LLP, where
he had practised since 2008.

Gal Smolar joined Miller Thomson
LLP as counsel in the firm's newly
opened Legal Knowledge Centre
in downtown Vancouver. He was
most recently with MLT Aikins LLP.
Smolar practises corporate law
in the high-tech sphere, and has
participated — as either company
counsel or investor counsel — in
numerous M&A transactions of
Vancouver-based companies. He
advises on a wide range of mat-
ters, including the formation of
Canadian technology accelerators
and investment funds. He is called
to the Bars of BC and Israel.
The Honourable Frank Newbould
joined Thornton Grout Finnigan
LLP as counsel. He also joined
the roster of Arbitration Place as a
member arbitrator. Newbould was
most recently the team lead of the
Commercial List Court in Toronto.
He retired from the Bench in June
after serving for over 10 years. His
work on the the Nortel insolvency
proceeding — the largest in Can-
adian history — involved jointly
conducting a trial using video-link
technology and issuing unpreced-
ented complementary decisions.
