A Basis for Optimism
IN THIS ISSUE we present the winners of our Lexpert Zenith Awards: Celebrating
Women in Law. We would like to take a moment to thank our Advisory Board for
their time and attention in selecting these winners: Emily Jelich, TD Securities Inc.;
Linda Bertoldi, Borden Ladner Gervais LLP; Patricia Gallivan, Lawson Lundell
LLP; Kate Broer, Dentons Canada LLP; Michelle Awad, McInnes Cooper; Lorne
Sossin, Osgoode Hall; Nikki Gershbain, Pro Bono Students Canada; Erika Cham-
berlain, Western Law; and Ian Holloway, University of Calgary Faculty of Law.
As you will see (p. 30), this year's Zenith winners are lawyers who have advanced
the position of women in the profession and society by leading firms, starting firms,
and making ground-breaking contributions to pro bono and charitable organiza-
tions. Increasingly, as they pursue these initiatives, they do so with leaders from oth-
er equity-seeking groups. is year, the Zenith Awards were very competitive. We
had many nominations of highly qualified and engaged lawyers. ese nominees
might well say there is a lot of work yet to be done to achieve justice. At the same
time, we see their achievements as a basis for optimism, especially since we know
they are not stopping anytime soon.
However, your help is needed. Even though the legal profession is undergoing dra-
matic change, its justice role remains key. We suggest you read about these winners
and ask one whose interests coincide with your own how you can get involved.
