ONTARIO TORONTO
In Toronto, Gowling WLG welcomed Ar-
chie Rabinowitz, Brian Cohen and Da-
vid Lobl as partners in its global private
client services practice group. All have ex-
tensive experience in fiduciary, estate and
capacity litigation, estate and succession
planning, and estate administration.
Jason Saltzman returned to Gowling
WLG, where he is now a partner. Saltzman
was a partner in the firm's predecessor,
Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP, where
he practised for more than a decade prior to
joining Dentons Canada LLP in 2013. He
advises on corporate finance and securities
law, with a focus on securities offerings,
M&A, private equity and venture capital
transactions. Saltzman is also experienced
in the area of alternative finance.
Henry Bertossi (see p. 14) and Brad
Elberg moved to Allen McDonald Swartz
(AMS) as partners in the five-lawyer bou-
tique. Elberg provides advice on a variety
of matters, including M&A, corporate
governance and regulatory compliance.
Prior to joining AMS, he was a partner at
Miller omson LLP, and previous to that,
was COO and General Counsel of an inde-
pendent investment dealer. His first career,
as an amateur and professional athlete, in-
volved playing football with the Winnipeg
Blue Bombers, Toronto Argonauts and
Hamilton Tiger-Cats, as well as a stint on
Canada's Olympic bobsleigh team.
Sana Halwani joined Lenczner Slaght
Royce Smith Griffin LLP as a partner, aer
relocating from Gilbert's LLP. Halwani has
an IP litigation practice encompassing pat-
ent, copyright, trademark and trade secret
matters. She advises a range of clients from
soware companies to fashion designers.
BLG welcomed Grace Pereira as counsel
where she continues to advise on taxation of
investment funds. Prior to joining the firm,
she was with Torys LLP.
Loreto Grimaldi joined ECN Capital as
SVP General Counsel & Secretary. Grimal-
di is the former EVP and General Counsel
of Progressive Waste Solutions Ltd.
Gregory Azeff and Kyla Mahar joined
Miller omson as partners practising
bankruptcy and insolvency law.
Loopstra Nixon LLP appointed Allan
Ritchie as Managing Partner and head of
its executive committee. Ritchie takes over
the post from Ian Scarlett.
QUÉBEC MONTRÉAL
In Montréal, Hubert Sibre joined Miller
omson as a partner. Sibre focuses his
practice on commercial litigation and in-
solvency. His clients include manufacturing
and service companies, financial institu-
tions and investors. He was previously with
DLA Piper (Canada) LLP .

MOVES
The Honourable Thomas Cromwell
joins BLG's ranks as a distinguished
counsel advising on litigation in both
Ottawa and Vancouver. He served on
the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC)
for almost eight years, retiring in
September 2016. Prior to his ele-
vation to the SCC, Cromwell sat on
the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal. His
reasoning for the appeals court in
R. v. Marshall and R. v. Bernard was
applied in the landmark Tsilhqot'in
Nation v. British Columbia case, in
which the Court clarified the test for
Aboriginal title over non-treaty lands.

Lavery appointed lawyer and pub-
lic-relations advisor Anik Trudel as
its Chief Executive Officer. Trudel
implements the firm's strategic
plan while managing its daily func-
tioning. She aims to transform the
delivery of legal services by using
corporate best practices, hiring
talent and developing the firm's
business plan. The independent
status of Lavery offers "the lee-
way and the possibility to be nim-
ble and agile," she told the Legal
Feeds blog when she assumed
the role. Trudel was a litigator at
Stikeman Elliott LLP for 20 years.
