James Smellie's practice focuses on energy regulatory matters, administrative law and litigation. He has
extensive experience representing a wide range of stakeholders in the energy industry before federal and
provincial regulatory tribunals, including in respect of facility approvals, rate and tariff issues and export/
import authorizations, as well as on specific projects such as the Sable Offshore Energy/Maritimes &
Northeast Pipeline Projects, the Mackenzie Gas Project, the proposed Alaska Pipeline and the Maritime
Link component of the Lower Churchill hydro-electric project. His litigation focus includes commercial
arbitrations, both as counsel and arbitrator, as well as appearances in the provincial and federal superior

Chris Sanderson's practice focuses on regulation and First Nations consultation in the energy and resource
sectors throughout Western and Northern Canada. He advises utilities, marketers, mine and energy
project developers and governments with respect to project authorizations, consultation requirements,
transportation arrangements and marketing issues in the natural gas, oil, electricity and mining sectors.
Sanderson appears frequently before federal and provincial permitting, energy and environmental boards
