Sweatman LLP (TDS Law) was honoured
with the Richard J. Scott award by the
Law Society of Manitoba. e award is
bestowed annually on an individual who
advances the rule of law through advocacy,
litigation, teaching, research or writing.
Doug Forbes of TDS Law was appoint-
ed President of the Canadian Condomini-
um Institute National Executive Board.
ONTARIO TORONTO
In Toronto, Peter Cavanagh, formerly of
Dentons, and Jasmine Akbarali, formerly
of Lerners LLP, were appointed judges of
the Superior Court of Justice.
WeirFoulds LLP welcomed Sandra As-
tolfo (see above) and Max Shafir, QC, as
partners in its construction practice group.
Scot Patriquin has joined WeirFoulds
as a partner in the firm's corporate group
focusing on corporate/commercial, intel-
lectual property and tax law.
Edmond Lamek moved his insolvency
and restructuring practice to WeirFoulds
from Borden Ladner Gervais LLP.
Jennifer King joined Gowling WLG as
a partner practising litigation in the firm's
environmental law group. Over her career,
she has appeared before all levels of court in
Ontario, as well as before the Ontario Mu-
nicipal Board. She has also appeared before
the Supreme Court of Canada.
RJ Falconi was appointed Executive
VP, Chief Legal & Governance Officer,
General Counsel & Corporate Secretary at
CSA Group. Kathryn Yung was promoted
to the organization's VP, Deputy General
Counsel role.
In ornhill, Port Perry and Beaverton,
Ont., Jennifer Friedman, former litiga-
tion counsel at the Ontario (horse) Racing
Commission, launched three offices devot-
ed to animal-related law.
QUÉBEC MONTRÉAL, TROIS-RIVIÈRES
In Montréal, Langlois lawyers, LLP wel-
comed Sean Griffin to its litigation practice
group as a partner. Early in his career, Grif-
fin was part of a team devoted to restructur-
ing the asset-backed commercial paper mar-
ket. Since then, he has developed expertise
advising on regulatory investigations, such
as those undertaken by the Investment In-
dustry Regulatory Organization of Canada.
Mylany David is now practising with
Langlois lawyers aer moving from Den-
tons last spring. She has more than 15 years
of experience representing real estate pro-
moters, financial institutions, owners and
lessees in connection with real property,
energy and infrastructure projects.

Stephen Drymer is now Chair of the
ICC Canada Arbitration Committee, suc-
ceeding Fabien Gélinas of McGill Univer-
sity's Faculty of Law. He is head of Interna-
tional Arbitration and ADR at Woods LLP.
In Trois-Rivières, Frédéric Laflamme is
now a litigator with Lavery, de Billy, L.L.P.
He returns to law aer a decade-long career
in broadcast journalism.

MOVES
The Honourable Madam Justice
Candace Grammond, formerly a
partner of Pitblado Law, is now a
judge of Manitoba Court of Queen's
Bench, after being appointed in
October 2016. She has devoted
her career to practising commercial
litigation. Her work included serving
as lead counsel to the Public Util-
ities Board of Manitoba. On the pro
bono side, she represented an acci-
dent victim in a payment of benefits
case before the Manitoba Court of
Appeal which led to a change in the
law for all accident victims on that
particular question.

Construction Law
Sandra Astolfo made the move
to WeirFoulds LLP where she con-
tinues her practice of construction
law — an area in which she is certi-
fied by the Law Society of Upper Can-
ada, and on which she has focused
for more than 20 years. She acts
for her clients in prosecuting and
defending lien and breach of trust
claims, product liability proceedings
related to construction projects,
receiverships in lien trustees and
negotiating and drafting construction
contracts. Astolfo was previously
co-chair of the construction law
practice group at Torkin Manes.
