In Toronto, David Sterns of Sotos LLP
was appointed President of the Ontario
Bar Association (OBA) for the 2016-17
term. He replaces Ed Upenieks in the role.
Sterns says a push for implementing e-filing
at all courts is at the top of his agenda.
"I hope that I'll have moved the needle
on court reform," he told a Law Times re-
porter in September.
Quinn Ross took over the role of First
Vice President of the OBA. Ross assists
President David Sterns with directing the
strategic mandates of the association. He
is the Managing Partner of e Ross Firm,
which has offices in Goderich, Kincardine
and Stratford, Ont.
David Wingfield (see p. 16) moved to
Sutts, Strosberg LLP. Wingfield is joined
by Nicholas Cartel, who worked alongside
him at the antitrust/competition law divi-
sion of the Department of Justice. Cartel
joins the firm as a partner. In addition to
his corporate-commercial litigation prac-
tice, he acts on intellectual property mat-
ters involving patents, trademarks, copy-
rights and industrial designs. He holds a
PhD in clinical biochemistry.
David Corbett was appointed Chair of
Ontario's Workplace Safety and Insurance
Appeals Tribunal in September. Corbett
has been a leader throughout his career. He
founded the employment and labour prac-
tice group at Fasken Martineau DuMoulin
LLP and also served as the firm's Managing
Partner from 2006 to 15.
Aird & Berlis LLP welcomed Michael
Horvat to its workplace law and labour
and employment practice groups as a
partner. Horvat has practised labour and
employment law for 17 years. He advises
employers — in both federal and provin-
cial jurisdictions — on all areas of the law,
including employment standards, human
rights, discipline, discharge, union certifica-
tion and wrongful dismissal.
Kyle Plunkett joined Aird & Berlis as an
associate in the firm's financial services prac-
tice group. Plunkett is experienced in all ar-
eas of Canadian insolvency and restructur-
ing proceedings and transactions.
BLG welcomed associates Reed Taubner
and Sonny Ingram to the firm. Taubner
is an intellectual property practitioner and
also a trademark agent. Ingram focuses on
construction and surety law.
QUÉBEC MONTRÉAL
In Montréal, Yan Besner joined Osler as a
partner and member of the firm's real estate
practice group. He represents lenders, prop-
erty owners, developers and retailers in the
financing and acquisition of immovable and
movable assets. He also advises on commer-
cial leasing matters. Besner was previously a
partner at Dentons.
BLG welcomed Julie Fortier and Kevin
Mailloux as associates. Fortier practises
construction law and also advises on profes-
sional liability. Mailloux is a member of the
firm's financial services practice group.
Simon Chénard joined Langlois lawyers,
LLP as a commercial law practitioner. He
has a particular interest in businesses that
use advanced technology.

In London, Brandon Barnes Trickett
joined Hogan Lovells as a senior associ-
ate advising on financial services disputes.
Barnes Trickett was previously with DLA
Piper (Canada) LLP.

MOVES
Maryse Bertrand, Ad.E., has landed
at BLG, where she is now a stra-
tegic advisor in the firm's securities
and capital markets practice group.
Bertrand is an accomplished direc-
tor and advisor, having spent al-
most six years as General Counsel
of CBC/Radio-Canada, and prior
to that, 20 years as a partner at
Davies. At the CBC, her portfolio
included health and safety, real
estate and environment. She also
chaired the corporation's National
Crisis Committee. She recently
completed a Master of Science
in risk management at NYU.

Bankruptcy and Insolvency
Hugo Babos-Marchand moved his
bankruptcy and insolvency law
practice to BLG where he is now a
partner. He regularly advises banks,
trustees, receivers, corporations
and shareholders on matters under
the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act.
His practice also consists of bank-
ing litigation, including extraordinary
remedies, shareholders'disputes
and enforcement of foreign judg-
ments. He has represented clients
before all levels of courts in Québec
as well as before the Federal Court.

a partner at Davies.
