The legal landscape for miners is also changing
in Atlantic Canada.
Most significantly, the Nova Scotia House of Assem-
bly passed the Mineral Resources Act in May. While the
Mining Association of Nova Scotia applauded the over-
haul of the province's mining legislation as making the
regime "more modern and efficient and [encouraging ]
more investment and job creation," the impact on the
industry appears to be a mixed bag.
On the bright side, the Act doubles the length of
exploration licences to fully two years, with renewals
possible for two-year terms as well; provides that pro-
duction must commence within five years of obtaining
a lease, supplanting the previous two-year limit; allows
