A snapshot of recent hires, mergers, splits and appointments across Canada
BRITISH COLUMBIA VANCOUVER
In Vancouver, omas Isaac moved to Cas-
sels Brock & Blackwell LLP, where he leads
the firm's national Aboriginal law prac-
tice group. He was previously with Osler,
Hoskin & Harcourt LLP. Isaac advises en-
ergy, mining and forestry clients on project-
related environmental assessment, regulato-
ry matters, negotiations and constitutional
issues. He is currently serving, along with
Anne Marie Doyle, as a government min-
isterial special representative. Isaac helps to
advance treaty and self-government negotia-
tions with the Akaitcho Dene First Nation
and the Northwest Territory Métis Nation.
Dana Hooker made the move to DLA
Piper (Canada) LLP, where she is now asso-
ciate counsel. Previously, she was a partner
with Dentons Canada LLP and manager of
its employment and labour group practice.
She is an experienced advisor for employers
across a broad range of industries, and assists
in areas including occupational health and
safety, workers compensation, human rights
and labour disputes. Additionally, she spent
six years incorporating commercial litiga-
tion into her practice.

In Toronto, Lisa Cabel joined Norton Rose
Fulbright Canada LLP as a partner practis-
ing labour and employment law. She was
previously with Borden Ladner Gervais LLP
(BLG). She has appeared before the Ontario
Labour Relations Board, the Human Rights
Tribunal of Ontario, the Superior Court of
Ontario, the Divisional Court of Ontario
and the Ontario Court of Appeal.
Gavin MacKenzie and his daughter
Brooke MacKenzie have formed a litiga-
tion boutique, MacKenzie Barristers, where
they concentrate on appeals and profession-
al-liability cases. Gavin MacKenzie, who
was most recently a partner of DLA Piper,
is well-known for his work in legal malprac-

deal teams advising Stantec on its
$580-million equity financing, and ad-

$2.3-billion common-share offering.
He has founded and directed several
public companies, including most
recently Roll-Up Capital. Inman is an
active member of the Métis Nation
of Alberta. He enjoys cycling and
spending time with his family.

Radha Curpen of Bennett Jones
was appointed managing partner
of the firm's Vancouver office,
where she is also co-head of the
Aboriginal law practice group. Cur-
pen is experienced in management
and avoidance of environmental
crises, and advises on matters
such as contaminated sites and the
transportation of crude oil by rail.
She also negotiates with regulatory
authorities and First Nations. She
is called to the bars of Manitoba,
Ontario and New York. Curpen
is originally from Mauritius and is
fluent in both English and French.
George Valentini returned to Osler
as counsel after spending three
years as general counsel of Dream
Unlimited. His work at Dream in-
cluded directing a reorganization of
Dream Office REIT's management
structure. Before going in-house, Val-
entini practised for 27 years at Osler,
where his career included chairing
the firm's national real estate group.
He has particular expertise in REITs,
having advised them on all aspects
of business. He also has experience
with asset acquisitions and dispos-
itions, project developments and
financings, and commercial leasing.
