A snapshot of recent hires, mergers, splits & appointments across Canada

In Vancouver, Bull, Housser & Tupper LLP
appointed health and technology lawyer Ja-
net Grove as its managing partner. She re-
places Simon Margolis, QC, who had been
managing partner since 2011. e executive
committee now comprises Max Collett,
Ryan Dalziel, Greg Lewis, QC, and Sandy
Delayen, the firm's chief operating officer.
Graham Scott and Stewart Lockwood
are now practising corporate and securities
law at McCullough O'Connor Irwin LLP,
where they are associate counsels. Both
lawyers were previously principles at Vector
Corporate Finance Lawyers. ey have ex-
tensive experience supporting clients in the
mining and natural resource sector.
Richard Johnson moved his intellectual
property practice to Bull Housser, where he
is now counsel. Prior to joining the firm,
Johnson practised at Borden Ladner Ger-
vais LLP (BLG). He is also a registered pat-
ent and trademark agent.
Pamela Cyr is now the director of stu-
dent programs for Bull Housser. She made
the move from the Peter A. Allard School
of Law at University of British Columbia
where she managed the career services office.
Gowling WLG welcomed Marcus Os-
trowerka as an associate. He practises em-
ployment and labour law in the firm's Van-
couver and Calgary offices.
Warren Beil joined Gowling WLG as an
associate. Beil practises corporate commer-
cial law with a focus on banking. Prior to
joining the firm, he served as general counsel
to Cactus Club Cafe restaurant chain.
Andrew Ming-Lum is now an associate
at Gowling WLG practising intellectual
property law.
McCullough O'Connor Irwin LLP wel-
comed Katie Blundy as an associate. She
practises corporate and securities law.
Jackson Doyle, Dionne Liu and Kelsey
Rose joined Harper Grey LLP as associates.
Jeff Scobie joined Lawson Lundell as
a partner practising energy law, with
a specific expertise in liquefied natural
gas (LNG) and gas to liquids (GTL).
Scobie was most recently a partner
with Bennett Jones. Prior to that he
was General Counsel to Qatar Petrol-
eum in Doha, where he handled much
of the development and financing of
Qatari gas projects as the country
was rapidly expanding its involvement.
He has taught for many years at the
University of Calgary's Faculty of Law
where his students have benefited
from his knowledge of international
petroleum transactions.

Construction lawyer and civil en-
gineer Helmut Johannsen moved
to Singleton Urquhart where he is
now associate counsel. Johannsen
was formerly a partner at Fasken
Martineau, where he practised for
more than 35 years and headed its
national construction law practice
group. He advises on all aspects of
law related to construction, including
transactional work, litigation, arbitra-
tion and mediation. He has acted on
a wide range of projects including
roads, hospitals and pipelines. He is
Co-Vice-Chair of the IBA's Internation-
al Construction Projects Committee.
Melinda Park was appointed chair
of BLG's governing body, or national
council, effective July 1, 2016. She
is the first woman to hold the role.
She replaces Robert Shouldice,
who has chaired the council since
2013. Park is an accomplished
securities lawyer who recently led
on deals such as Petra Petroleum's
acquisition of Mitra Energy and
PetroNova's plan of arrangement
with Petroamerica. She is an active
member of the Calgary community
and serves on the board of the
Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy
Centre. She has two sons.
