Doug Crowther co-leads the Dentons Canada Energy Sector group. His practice focuses on energy regulatory
law and includes representation of industry interests before such bodies as the National Energy Board, the
Alberta Utilities Commission and the Alberta Energy Regulator. He appears as counsel in respect of: pipeline
and electricity facility approvals; industry disputes; toll/rate and tariff matters; and electric and gas utility
regulation. He has been actively involved in numerous significant proceedings, including those relating to:
restructuring of the Alberta electricity industry; the setting of electricity and pipeline tolls/rates and tariffs;
and pipeline project approval. He also advises developers of transmission, co-generation, renewable and other
electric power projects.

Mike Hurst is a partner and manager of the firm's Energy Transactions Practice Section in the Calgary office.
Hurst's expertise is in the area of energy law. His advice has been sought with respect to oil and gas upstream,
midstream and pipeline acquisitions, the structuring of greenfield projects, financing transactions and prod-
uct sales arrangements. Hurst has worked on infrastructure projects in the Western Canada Sedimentary
Basin, the Canadian Arctic and offshore areas and South America. Hurst has acted in the structuring of three
large oil sands joint ventures.

James Smellie's practice focuses on energy regulatory matters, administrative law and litigation. He has exten-
sive experience representing a wide range of stakeholders in the energy industry before federal and provincial
regulatory tribunals, including in respect of facility approvals, rate and tariff issues and export/import author-
izations, as well as on specific projects such as the Sable Offshore Energy/Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline
Projects, the Mackenzie Gas Project, the proposed Alaska Pipeline and the Maritime Link component of the
Lower Churchill hydro-electric project. His litigation focus includes commercial arbitrations, both as counsel
and arbitrator, as well as appearances in the provincial and federal superior and appellate courts, and the Su-
preme Court of Canada. He is widely recognized by his peers and in several ranking publications – including
