Counsel. One of Canada's most respected advocates, the Honorable Ian Binnie served for
nearly 14 years as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. Binnie authored more than
170 opinions, including on landmark cases involving issues of patent interpretation and
validity, protection of trade-marks, media law, commercial disputes, punitive damages,
expert evidence and many aspects of constitutional, criminal and administrative law.
Over the course of three decades as a litigator, he argued cases in most of the common-law
provinces and appeared regularly before the Supreme Court on a range of constitutional,
civil and criminal matters.
Senior litigation partner and chair of BLG's National Public Law Group. Practice
involves a broad range of civil litigation, including commercial disputes, directors' and
officers' duties and liability, shareholder, oppression and other corporate disputes, securi-
ties, class actions, constitutional and administrative law issues. Has appeared as counsel
before all levels of the courts in Ontario, and before the Federal Court of Appeal, British
Columbia Court of Appeal, Supreme Court of Canada, and numerous administrative
tribunals, including the Ontario Securities Commission. Served as law clerk to the
Honorable Justice W.R. McIntyre, Supreme Court of Canada, 1979–1980; Elected

John Callaghan's broad practice includes civil litigation, commercial litigation, admin-
istrative issues and regulatory offense work. He appears before all levels of courts and
tribunals, including arbitration panels. His expertise is oen sought for complex cases.
He has been described as a very "versatile litigator" who is "unflappable" in his handling
of the myriad of cases he has "on the go." Callaghan was elected by the profession as
a bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada, which governs the legal profession in
Ontario. Callaghan is a member of the Civil Rules Committee, having been appointed by
successive Chief Justices of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. Callaghan is co-author
of Class Action Law and Practice (Butterworths), the leading and most frequently cited
