Warren Mitchell, QC, was educated at the University of British Columbia, from which
he holds both Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Law degrees. He was first admitted
to the Bar of Alberta (1963) and has since been admitted to the Bars of British Columbia
in 1966 and Ontario in 1990. Mitchell served as a solicitor in the Taxation Division of
the Department of National Revenue until 1965. Mitchell's practice focuses on large case
tax litigation. He has appeared as counsel in the provincial, trial and appellate divisions of
British Columbia and Ontario, and in the Tax Court of Canada, Federal Court – Trial
Division and the Federal Court of Appeal, as well as the Supreme Court of Canada.

of Trial Lawyers; Avocat émérite (bestowed by Barreau du Québec on its most distin-

of Canada Medal (2014). Has extensive experience in complex, high-stakes litigation.
Appeared at all levels of court in Canada, including the Supreme Court of Canada, in
a number of leading cases and in a wide range of areas. Lead counsel who successfully
argued BCE Inc.'s appeal before the Supreme Court of Canada regarding C$52-billion
takeover by Teachers' Consortium, considered one of the most important commercial
cases decided in Canada. Recognized in Chambers Global; Who's Who Legal Canada:

Tax Review's Tax Controversy Leaders and World Tax. Called to Québec Bar (1976),

Joel Nitikman focuses on resolving tax disputes between taxpayers and federal and
provincial tax authorities. Has acted as counsel in numerous tax cases at all levels of
court, both provincially and federally, and has also settled many cases out of court at
the pre-assessment or objection stage. A professor of tax dispute resolution at the UBC
Faculty of Law, he also practices corporate and individual business tax, focusing on
offshore tax planning, corporate reorganizations and other business-related tax matters.
His practice also includes advice on GST and provincial commodity taxes. He has acted
for numerous private and public companies on complex, tax-efficient restructurings, and
obtained numerous advance rulings from Revenue Canada and provincial tax authori-
ties. He writes and lectures extensively about various tax subjects. He is a member of the
CTF, the IFA and numerous other tax groups and was awarded the Douglas J. Sherba-
niuk Distinguished Writing Award at the 58th Annual Canadian Tax Conference.

sented clients before the tax authorities, the Tax Court of Canada, the Federal Court
