He was called to the British Columbia Bar in 1984 and the Alberta Bar in 1996. » James Smellie's practice focuses on energy regulatory matters, administrative law and litigation. He has extensive experience representing a wide range of stakeholders in the energy industry before federal and provincial regulatory tribunals, including in respect of facility approvals, rate and tariff issues and export/import authorizations, as well as on specifi c projects such as the Sable Off shore Energy/Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline Projects, the Mackenzie Gas Project, the proposed Alaska Pipeline and the Maritime Link component of the Lower Churchill hydro-electric project. His litigation focus includes commercial arbitrations, both as counsel and arbitrator, as well as appearances in the provincial and federal superior and appellate courts, and the Supreme Court of Canada.
