When you think about eco-friendly environmental issues, mining projects might not come to mind, but the same forces having an effect on mainstream manufacturing industries are also affecting mine operators. Green considerations hit mining companies in a couple of different areas, says Charles Kazaz, an environmental lawyer at Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP. "Mines have tailing facilities, for example, and you have heavy rain that goes into the tailings facilities raising the water level, now have to think about how you manage the water that's generated from the mine operation. So the effects of climate change on the mine operation have to be considered. "Another aspect is that often these mines are in areas where they don't have direct access to a power source and their energy comes from diesel that has to be brought in on site, so they are using a lot of fuel to
