6| INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS
P3s
Come of Age
AS THE PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP MODEL
MATURES, A WIDER RANGE OF PROJECTS
ARE CONSIDERING P3s — BY BEV CLINE
CANADA'S INFRASTRUCTURE GAP is currently $145 billion, according to the
Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. For companies and advisors working in the
public-private partnership sector (P3s), this spells opportunity. But the kinds of opportunities that are economically P3-feasible and how the model, which brings together public and private entities to build infrastructure, will evolve is open for debate.
"Canada's infrastructure deficit is large and, faced with fiscal reality, that combination demands that we look at innovative ways to address infrastructure development
and service delivery," says Mark Romoff, President and CEO of the Canadian Council
for Public-Private Partnerships (CCPPP). "Every single federal and provincial budget
this year has identified infrastructure as one of its highest priorities and also identified
P3s as one of the approaches they will be adopting to meet the challenge."
