More than 500 gathered to celebrate the best
in Canadian law - and a return to in-person
gatherings.
You can tell lawyers were ready to party
– after more than two years of COVID-19
lockdown – just by the way they entered Bay
Street's Arcadian Court venue in Toronto for
the Canadian Law Awards.
There they were at the May 19th gala, in all
their finery, looking especially well dressed,
fitting the glamour of what is likely their first
ballroom event since March 2020. Even the
colours of the clothing seemed more vibrant
– less black, more hot pink and gold. Hugs and
handshakes were shared all around as lawyers
met with colleagues they hadn't seen in a long
time.
The gala was the CLA's first in-person event,
as the pandemic forced the awards to take
place online in its inaugural year, 2020, and
in 2021 as well. This year's in-person event,
attracting more than 500, was therefore a
bit of a coming-out party for lawyers as
Canada lurches into what looks like a post-
pandemic future, though all of us have come to
understand that things can change on a dime.
