Mr. Zalmanowitz is based in the Edmonton office of Dentons Canada LLP. Barry is co-chair of the Firm's
National Competition Law Group. His practice focuses on competition and antitrust law, providing both
advisory services and representation in litigation and administrative law hearings. He represents clients in all
aspects of the Competition Act, including mergers and notifiable transactions, cartels, abuse of dominance,
and deceptive marketing provisions of the Act. Barry also advises clients with respect to compliance with the
Investment Canada Act. Barry has extensive experience representing clients in the Energy and Energy Service
industries. Barry taught competition law at the University of Alberta law school for several years. He was a
member of the executive committee of the National Competition Law section of the CBA from 2003–09
and was Section Chair in 2008–09. Barry has attended ICN meetings as the Competition Bureau's non-
government advisor. Barry was called to the Bar in 1980 and appointed Queen's Counsel in 2002.

Joseph Adler is a senior corporate and commercial lawyer who assists clients in all matters related to their
operations and transactions in Canada and a Registered Trademark Agent. His particular emphasis is in
franchising and distribution, intellectual property law and cross-border trade. Joseph serves as legal counsel
for Canadian and US (and other foreign) franchisors doing business in Canada and Canadian franchisors

matters and reorganizations. He has extensive experience advising a diverse range of clients on domestic and

ence. John is a long-standing active member of the ABA M&A Committee. He was the inaugural Chair
of a working group of Canadian M&A deal lawyers that studies and develops reports for the ABA's M&A
Committee on trends in deal terms used in Canadian private company acquisitions, and was Chair of that
working group for seven years. Currently, he is Co-Chair of a Task Force that is updating the ABA's model
asset purchase agreement. In 2017 and 2018, John was named to the prestigious global list of OUTstanding
Leading LGBT+ Executives, as presented by the Financial Times, in recognition of his business achievements
and impact on LGBT inclusion within McMillan and externally. Previously he received a Lexpert Zenith
