A model for OHS I 've always wanted to be married to a centerfold," Monica Matthew told me with a laugh the evening her husband, Doug Matthew, accepted the award for Safety Leader of the Year. You can see Matthew's centerfold — fully clothed, I might add — on page 20 and read all about what made him the deserving recipient of this year's award. I spent a day with Matthew where he was interviewed for the article, filmed for an exclusive video and photo- graphed for the cover of the magazine — and what a day it was. We had so many peers, employees and executives wanting to be apart of the celebration that we couldn't fit everyone in in one day. It was incredible to hear the array of compliments about Matthew, notably his excellent communication style, sense of humour and commitment to safety. No more than five minutes after we put our stuff down in the Alectra Utilities boardroom in Hamilton, Matthew proceeded to tell us where the exits were located and what to do in case of an emergency. I was told he does this at the beginning of every meeting and often includes a little safety message too. Something that stood out to me was not just Matthew's clear focus on safety, but also his passion for wellness. This is something that often gets overlooked in the safety world and passed on to the human resources department, but Matthew proved to me how integrated wellness is to a complete occupational health and safety program. He often allows for stretch breaks when he is hosting a meeting, encouraging workers to move around. He walks as much as he can every day and regularly surpasses the standard goal of 10,000 steps per day. He has been a model for others to follow as he recently lost 200 pounds and just completed a 200-kilometre bike ride from Toronto to Niagara Falls, Ont. for the Ride to Conquer Cancer with his Alectra colleagues. Glyn Jones' column this month looks at another area of OHS that safety professionals need to become more familiar with: mental health (also known as psychological safety). It is widely accepted that mental health issues are a leading cost of disability claims and the workplace is a contributing factor in mental illness. Jones explains how you can brush up on your mental health and psychological safety skills on page 10. Another emerging issue that all safety managers should understand is blue light. As smartphones and tablets become necessary work tools, employees are exposed to more blue light every day, which can pose health risks. Even overhead lighting has more blue light now than ever before. One key problem with blue light is that it can cause insomnia, which poses a safety hazard itself. Learn more on page 22. When Monica watched her husband accept the Safety Leader of the Year award at the Canada's Safest Employers awards gala (page 9), she was beaming with pride. In fact, all the Alectra employees who came out to support Mat- thew were smiling from ear to ear. It was truly heartwarming to see the respect, admiration and love they all had for this hardworking, passionate, model safety professional.
